(Note - had to rerecord due to bad file. Editing a bit choppy, but firm nonetheless. Enjoy!)

Taking my cue (again) from Sound Opinions, I'm going to be focusing on a band that I had blogged about long ago - at least, one of their albums.

This is a trial podcast, of a sort, as the focus is on the first three albums by cult favorite band Big Star. Enjoy!

Show Notes:

Sound Opinions Album Dissection - # 1 Record/Radio City

Even though there are some "rerun" podcast, this month's Record You Should Own (coming on the heels of August) is a compilation by a band that deserves much more attention - Special View by the Only Ones.

This month's selection is a record that made me cool for all of about two seconds in high school. Hear about that story - as well as my usual ramblings - when I discuss Prince's Purple Rain

But don't just take my word for it - listen to a more in-depth analysis on Sound Opinions.

And finally, there's a little babbling at the end about some upcoming news and events.

Yes, I've been away for two months...but as a special gift, a double Record You Should Own - a box set's worth of garage rock.

And a brief tribute to Sky Saxon of the Seeds.

Finishing up the blog's fifth anniversary, I complete my liveblogging of the Kids in the Hall by discussing their sole cinematic outing, Brain Candy, as well as discuss three (!) albums you should own. (All Kids in the Hall related, and two out-of-print, but worth hunting down)

Kids in the Hall - Brain Candy (DVD)

With news that they will be featured in a video game - and that their albums will be remastered for the first time in years - it seemed right to do a podcast about the Beatles.

But what album will be featured - With the Beatles? Revolver? Sgt. Pepper? Jimmy Nichols Sings Tender Campfire Songs?

Give a listen as Gordon talks about his favorite Beatles album - and why it's a Record You Should Own.

This month, it's a dual Record You Should Own/Public Domain Drive-In entry, and quite frankly - it's a doozy.

It's focused on one of the forefathers of ... well, modern music. Robert Johnson, the legendary bluesman.

Although you can easily download several of his songs, and there are several compilations, you might want to head to our affilate store to purchase the compilation recommended in the podcast.

Thanks for lisiting!

This month, the Record You Should Own is in tribute to Lux Interior of the Cramps - I'll be talking a little bit about my love for the Cramps, and will feature songs from Psychedelic Jungle/Gravest Hits and Songs the Lord Taught Us, both of which are now available in our Amazon.com store. (Just click on the Record You Should Own link - you'll find these and many other discs of interest)

Trust me, once you've heard the Cramps, you'll buy all their albums.

RIP, Lux Interior. You'll be missed. Music will be a little less sexy.

It's a new year, and once again - it's time for another Record You Should Own podcast! This time 'round, it's one of my favorite albums, up for review!

(Since I'm using a new microphone, I sound a little different, due to room acoustics. If you think I can do better, my birthday's on March 6, and a nice professional mike makes a lovely gift. That and a portable MP3 recorder)

Also, a brief note towards the end about the Continuum Books proposal

It's two - count 'em - two podcasts in one half hour package!

First, the results from the Social Media A Go-Go contest are in...and I'll be contacting the winners for their info. (I should have prizes delivered by 12/20, just in time for Christmas!)

Also, we're featuring the music of an artist previously featured on the text version of the Record You Should Own - the Four Tops - in light of Mr. Levi Stubbs' passing last month.

Finally, if you're looking to own this month's record (and I'm working on December's) - or for any other holiday shopping without heading out - please head to the Blog THIS! Pal Online store. It features many items written about on the blog, and I get a small amount that helps pay for some overhead (most notably, this podcast account). So please, enjoy!

Just in time for Halloween....

This month's Record You Should Own is a disc that everyone should have in their collection. It's the Damned's Machine Gun Etiquette, which combines 70s punk energy with a slight hint of 60's garageness.

And if you don't believe me - give it a listen!

Once again, it's time for the Record You Should Own - and this month, it's the Replacements. The recent Ryko/Rhino reissue of Let It Be earns top marks, and quite frankly - you need to replace the worn-out tape or CD.

If you'd like to order this, head on over to the Blog THIS, Pal! Store and purchase a copy. (Although personally, we'd prefer you head over to your local indie record store. Yes, it means less money for us, but it also means that cool local businesses are being supported)

This month, we're focusing on the works of Joy Division - not only do we focus on their two studio albums, but also on two recent movies, Control and Joy Division (the documentary), both of which were featured at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.

The first "rerun" - actually, it's a re-presentation of an album originally featured in a text-only blog piece, focusing on Bo Diddley on the occasion of his passing.
